Microsoft ends Outlook.com preview, makes available globally

Outlook.com is no more in a preview phase. Microsoft announced today its browser-based e-mail service is now available globally and its preview stage has come to an end.

The software giant unveiled Outlook.com in July last year to compete with the Gmail, which was launched by Google way back in 2004 and has been a leader in the free mailing arena.

According to Microsoft, its Outlook.com is boldest e-mail move of the company and is a clear answer to Gmail. It has skydrive integration in simple interface. The company also promises of offering mega storage.

With Outlook.com Microsoft is phasing out its hotmail.com e-mail service which the company acquired in 1997. Even though the name Hotmail will not vanish completely, but the new mail service will be the only free consumer e-mail offering of the company.

Hotmail users can keep their @hotmail address or switch over to @outlook by claiming their address. It is optional, said Senior Director of Product Management Dharmesh Mehta.

Users who will not be switching over to Outlook.com from Hotmail.com now will be eventually done phase wise by Microsoft starting this week and will be finished by this summer.
