Upgrading the portable hard drive to USB 3.0 will make it
perform faster. We are aware that USB 2.0 portable hard drives are pedestrian
and are superb for adaptability. However, one must know that they are slow
actors.
Now, if you have decided to switch over to USB 3.0 the
enclosure will hike its efficiency conspicuously. This is how you do the
upgrading. But be warned, opening the enclosure of the portable hard drive will
lead to the cancellation of your warranty.
1- Remove the hard drive from the present enclosure.
It is going to be a difficult operation unless and until you
know how to open the old enclosure. It will wise to check the edges for hints,
on how the enclosure was joined together. Check for those hidden screws that
may be below the rubber feet or covers. There may be every chance that the
enclosure may be fixed with tabs. If that is the story, then segregate the two
parts of the enclosure. As soon as the old enclosure is opened, remove the
protruding screws, found in the sides or the bottom. The un-mounted drive may now
be removed from the SATA connector of the enclosure, very carefully.
2- Choosing of the USB 3.0 enclosure
There are many considerations to be taken on board before
selecting an enclosure. Like, be sure that the enclosure is USB 3.0, if the
owner would like to have a plastic or an aluminium enclosure. Well, I would
suggest go for aluminium. It is cooling and long lasting. However, it will
pinch the pocket. You can go for plastic, because the new USB hard drives are
not that expensive. One must consider the height of the hard drive. The
2.5-inch portable hard drive stands at the height 9.5 mm. However, some are
anywhere between 7mm to 12.5mm.
3- Join your old hard drive to the USB 3.0 enclosure
Always do check out the steps with your new enclosure while
installing the hard drive. After that, plug it into a USB 3.0 port.
